My name is Ravi Jayagopal. I'm an E-Business Architect and Web Developer from New York.

I have been coding pretty much all my life.

I wrote my first computer "program" when I was in the 8th grade, in a programming language called BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code - *phew*).

I've also written computer programs in FORTRAN, PASCAL, COBOL, dBase, Visual Basic, C, C++, Python, Perl, Ruby, PHP - and even in Microprocessor machine language!

I have developed enterprise web applications that work with database like MySQL, MS SQL, IBM DB2, Sybase, and Oracle.

I have worked on web applications for a wide range of clients: from individuals with a budget of a few hundred dollars, all the way to one of the largest telcos in the world. One of my more recent projects where I was the Technical Architect, had a budget of $1 Billion (yep, Billion with a 'B'!)

So, when it comes to web architecture, designing and programming, at the expense of sounding immodest and vain, I have to admit that I'm damn good at what I do. And among the geekiest techiiies you can find out there :-)

In the last 15 years, I have switched between various personal computers - from a big a$$ desktop running on the lousy Windows 3.1, right up to my sleek and spankin' new $2200 Dell XPS with 4GB memory - running on (the even lousier) Windows Vista.

I always religiously made backups of all my work. I started with floppy disks, usb keys, burned the files on CD's, and eventually moved to portable hard disks.

And when I moved from a beaten-up, rented apartment (my wife absolutely hated it!) to our own beautiful, independent house a few years ago (see pic below), during the move, I lost what was one of my most valuable possessions: my portable hard disk that had lterally millions of lines of code written in all kinds of programming languages - PHP, Java, Perl, Shell scripts, SQL scripts, technical design documents, architecture blueprints, technical videos, digital products I had purchased, and all kinds of other 'stuff'! ;-)

The main copy was on my PC and the backup was on this disk.

What I did not have, was a backup of the backup - which proved to be a very costly mistake, because of course, unable to resist Moore's Law, my PC crashed shortly thereafter.

So the main copy was gone. And the backup copy was also gone.

I moaned! And groaned! And whined!

And then moaned some more.

And then I gave up.

And then I forgot about it and moved on, re-writing a handful of those from scratch.

"Eureka! Eureka!", I Screamed!

Yes, I actually said that. And no, I didn't run out of the house dripping wet and butt-naked (that would have been quite a spectacle, for sure :-)

But given the way I was feeling at that moment, I am surprised that I didn't do something crazy like that!

I'm talking about the day I had finally given in and decided to clean our basement, after months of nagging - er, I mean, "begging" - by my wife :-)

And opening box after un-opened box filled with all kinds of junk, and almost at the point of going out and buying a face mask as all that dust was beginning to completely take over my lungs, my heart almost stopped as I saw a familar piece of shiny metal below a pile of old programming books, illuminated by the heavily lit recessed lights in my basement.

Yes, there it was - my beautiful, lovely, long-lost, precious hard disk!

Oh, I almost cried looking at the pretty little thing!
